Making a Difference
Through our Support Services, we have the potential to make a real and positive change in the community. This is one of our key areas of focus here at NEWARK LGBTQ COMMUNITY CENTER, and a source of much success for our LGBT Organization. Get in touch with us today and see how you can lend a helping hand with this program.
PROGRAMS & SERVICES
QUEER SUPPORT GROUP
This group meets regularly to discuss topics pertaining to the queer community, as chosen by participants. The groups will have a peer facilitator to guide the discussion. Participants will be asked to “check in” at the beginning of the meeting, but are not required to do so. There will also be breakout sessions held at least once a month led by individuals who identify with the specific group within the queer community and allies. People of all faiths, beliefs, and backgrounds are welcome. New participants are always welcome. Please check calendar for upcoming meetings.
Building a Strong Community
YOGA
Newark Yoga Movement has partnered with the Center to offer free yoga. The Center is a safe space for LGBTQ people; being mindful of this, everyone is welcome to participate. Come with an open heart and get ready to relax your mind, stretch your body, and meet new friends. Classes are free but donations are encouraged. Donations go to the Newark Yoga Movement to teach yoga in schools in Newark and the Center.
CRAFT NIGHT
A vibrant and energetic community style craft/crochet/knitting circle open to anyone who is interested is welcome to come and enjoy in on the fun! It is always a lively evening of conversation, fun, and laughter.
BOOK CLUB
This is a forum where poetry lovers and comic enthusiasts alike can come together and talk about the queer reading experience. The group is open to all LGBTQ+ and their allies with a love for reading. Genres chosen can be LGBTQ+, but do not have to be, and will be open to discussion. Refreshments will be served. Check the calendar for upcoming meetings.
COMMUNITY DINNER
Regularly held each month, our goal is to provide a space for people to connect with each other on a regular basis to “break bread” and participate in a group dialogue, if they wish. We ask for a donation of at least $5 at the door, although no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Any extra proceeds will go towards the next dinner, or donated back to the Center. The event is open to the LGBTQ community, allies, and friends.
ADULT GAME NIGHT
A group of adults to play card and board games, enjoy some light snacks, and if the feeling’s right, break out into dance with some classic music.
